ROAD MOVIE: The Beauty of the Everyday in Dießen

With ROAD MOVIE, painter Martin Gensbaur presents an exhibition that draws attention to those places where people usually just pass through. From November 22, 2026, to February 7, 2027, the Kunstfenster in Hofmark and the Adebar in Herrenstraße will transform into two venues for contemporary painting along the thoroughfares of Dießen.

Painting Between Movement and Stillness

Gas stations, traffic spots, and other so-called non-places form the starting point of the exhibition. Gensbaur focuses his attention on motifs that go unnoticed in everyday life: functional architecture, tank roofs, road spaces, and the quiet geometry of transitions. In painting, these prosaic places lose their purely utilitarian character and appear as concentrated image spaces.

The Unspectacular as an Aesthetic Experience

Over more than ten years, numerous gas station paintings have been created, mainly in Italy. The exhibition shows how the artist detaches the seemingly ordinary from the fleetingness of passing by. Forms, light, and architectural rhythms gain their own presence. The works preserve the immediacy of their motifs while simultaneously liberating them from time.

It is precisely this special quality of viewing these works: the images do not tell spectacular stories but sharpen the perception of the inconspicuous. A gas station becomes a modern landscape mark, a transit place turns into a silent stage, and a sober construction becomes an atmospheric counterpart.

Art in the Rhythm of Public Life

The special curation of ROAD MOVIE connects the two exhibition locations with their surroundings. The Kunstfenster and Adebar are themselves located along Dießen's thoroughfares. This creates an art experience that is not isolated from everyday life but occurs right in the midst of its flow. The exhibition illustrates how closely aesthetic experience, place perception, and cultural education are intertwined.

Martin Gensbaur: Painter, Art Educator, and Exhibition Organizer

Martin Gensbaur, born in Munich in 1958, studied painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. In addition to his artistic work, he is active as an art and museum educator, art historian, author, and lecturer. Together with art historian Ulrike Gensbaur, he operates the Kunstfenster in Dießen, a platform for contemporary painting and photography. His works have been exhibited, among others, at the Haus der Kunst Munich, the New City Museum Landsberg, and in numerous galleries and art institutions.

Art historically, Gensbaur's work stands for a figurative, observational painting that does not merely document everyday architecture and landscapes. It examines how perception gains significance from seemingly familiar forms. The exhibition connects to his long-standing engagement with non-places, Italian landscapes, and the visual culture of being on the move.

Conclusion: A Different Look at Familiar Paths

ROAD MOVIE invites visitors to examine their own surroundings with sharpened eyes. Visitors can expect an exhibition about gas stations, roads, and transitional spaces, but also about time, memory, and the quiet poetry of the ordinary. Those who experience painting as a means of expanding perception should definitely discover this special art experience live in Dießen.
