Braided sculptures in the historic Dove Tower
With the exhibition DEPARTURE, ABOVE THE WALLS. THREADS, Susanne Thiemann transforms the Dove Tower in Dießen on Lake Ammersee into an impressive venue for contemporary sculpture. From October 10 to November 1, 2026, her long, braided and tied works engage in a tension-filled dialogue with the vertical architecture of the historic tower.
Between heaviness and uprightness
Susanne Thiemann's sculptures develop from traditional weaving techniques, which she, as a trained basket weaver, translates into a contemporary visual language. Many works stand upright or hang freely in the space. Their long elements stretch downward, arch upward, or seem to traverse the space like textile lines.
The exhibition connects materiality and movement: weaving appears simultaneously stable and fragile, organic and constructed. In contemplating the works, questions about limitation, growth, and transgression emerge. The title refers to a departure that does not oppose the architecture but arises from its spatial tension.
An artistic experience on multiple levels
The Dove Tower impresses with its vertical structure and the views from various floors. Exactly this spatial effect serves as the starting point for Thiemann's curation of her own works. The sculptures respond to height, constriction, and opening, allowing the exhibition atmosphere to appear anew from floor to floor.
The association with Rapunzel and her long braid is close at hand, but remains only a poetic entry point. The crucial aspect is the aesthetic experience of the material: weavings, knots, and tied structures direct the gaze through the space. Inside and outside, rooting and movement, heaviness and uprightness meet in a concentrated installation.
Susanne Thiemann and contemporary weaving art
Susanne Thiemann was born in Kiel and lives and works in Munich. Her artistic practice combines craft precision with sculptural thinking. The traditional technique of weaving does not appear as a nostalgic quote but as an independent medium of contemporary art.
The exhibition thus offers a vivid approach to questions of material art, sculpture, and cultural education. It invites visitors to mentally trace the production process and to experience the effects of line, volume, surface, and spatial reference directly.
Opening and opening hours
The opening takes place on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 7:30 PM. The exhibition is open from October 10 to November 1, 2026, every Saturday and Sunday from 2 PM to 6 PM. The organizer is the Heimatverein Dießen e.V.
A visit to the Dove Tower promises a concentrated exploration of the works in an extraordinary historical interior. Those who wish to experience contemporary sculpture, weaving art, and site-specific installation directly will discover a special artistic experience at Lake Ammersee.
